Through the Crowd Culture project Fabel have been invited as speakers to the the 3rd Free Culture Research Conference” in Berlin the 8-9 October 2010. The conference is a joint initiative by The National University of Singapore, London School of Economics, Harvard University och Free University of Berlin and is suppose to work as a meeting spot for thoughts on new structures in cultural policy and forms of artistic creation. Our contribution will focus on hybrid cultural economy and methodological challenges as a result of that as well as incentive systems for collaborative creation processes.

Premiere in North America

The short film “North to South: Space for Memories” will do a parallel premier in Europa and North America through the festival network Scope-Art. The premier in Basel in the end of June was well attended and widely appreciated according to people who where there. Now we are looking forwards to the opening in New York in the end of the summer.

On the fesival “Videogud” (God of video) the 27-28 May at Uppsala Konsert och Kongress we will see the official premier of the film North to South: Momories of Space. The film is the final result of the Malteese/Italian/Swedish colaboratoin inisiated during 2009. The film won its space to participate together with seven other films in the category of professional art film.

The artistic director of Fabel Tony Hultqvist has a vernissage tonight in Kiev with his picture series “Folkhemmet”. The pictures is part of an exhibition that will tour Ukraine during the summer of 2010. If you are curious on how Ukrainians relate to photo you can read more on their blog: Woman 3000.

“Democratopol”

Some things are hard to translate but maybe this game would be called “Democratopol” if it had a English title. The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions gave Fabel the mission to create a engaging game on the topic of local democracy to highlight the issue for the upcoming election in Sweden. The game focuses on redistribution of excisting resources and on political debate. The 2000 first copies will be distributed to schools during the spring of 2010.

Real change in cultural policy

During the fall Fabel we at Febel have been designing an infrastructure for cultural finance. The infrastructure departs from crowd sourcing of decissions and micro finance. The goal is to increase the amount of realization of importand projects in the city of Stockholm and to open up stages for alternative narratives. The project is supported by the fund of innovative culture and The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems.

The external support is makes a beta test during 2010 possible.

Truly conference happiness!

Thursday the 26th of November finally came, at it was time for our Truly Yours conference. About 60 participants from Sweden, Finland, Malta, England, Italy and Umeå participated in debates, lectures and work shops.

We started of by identifying the big challenges we see in the participatory democracy field. The most critical questions we ask ourselves now are ” “Who has to gain by there not being participatory influence?”, “Who decides who participates?” “How do we give the people with power the courage to hand over influence?” and “”How can we make the target interested?”

The day moved on and we became enlightened on the latest projects, research and methods for participatory democracy.

Nils Hertting from Uppsala University started of by making us aware us on what a radical change process it is to move from a vertical structure with representative democracy to a horizontal structure with focus on participation.

Jan Lindgren shared with us how the Pirate Party is using social media in their democracy work.

Natasha Borg from Atelier on Malta shared the story of the project “from North to South: Space for Memories”.

Tommi Laitio from Demos Helsinki talk about how the role of the civil servant will change in the future. The role as an expert who gives recommendations and advice will be buried and a new role, as a process designer will emerge. The role of the designer will be to create processes that involves the real experts, the citizens, in the decision making.

Fredrik Lindegren, project leader for “Umeå – Culture Capital 2014″, took us on an impressive film tour and shared success stories on methods that the municipality of Umeå has used in order to involve the citizens in the decision making processes.

Today we’re launching the platform for gathering information for the project “North to South: Space for Memories” smsdebatt.se. The project mixes art and technology and is a colaboration between three European contreys. The project focuses on different forms of memories, in the Swedish case – Memories of the future.Max Valentin CEO of Fabel:
Why do you do this project?
- Our memories are often connected to a strong feeling. In this case we want to give people of Hässelby the oppertunity to create their memories, through their current feelings and thought to affect the future.
- The results will be presented to the local authoroties in a common seminar where all partners will attend. And for the whole context it is a way to work with new media to delegate influence and create a modern democracy.

Fabel designs and produces participatory contexts for learning that are intended for change of attitude and behaviours. Different purposes generate different solutions, thus Fabel lets the content determine the medium. Fabel often uses storytelling as a carrier of your message. The story is then implemented into the products that could be workshops, a group based computer game, a museum exhibition, a campaign, a simulation or a role play or a mix of all these. Fabel call these methods “wind tunnels”, environments to challenge the perception of the target group.
